As I understand it, the original "Federalist Party" collapsed over it's refusal to support the War of 1812 and it's flirtations with secession. Knowing this, why didn't the Democratic Party suffer the same fate after the American Civil War?

In her speech tonight Hillary Clinton claimed (in reference to Trump's Muslim ban) that since the pilgrims, America has been associated with religious freedom. I'm skeptical, didn't the pilgrims and other early colonists ban other religions / sects in their colonies?
